New Year Newsleter
January 2018
Happy New Year to you all. I hope you have had a super holiday a lucky few of you will be still on a break. Perhaps some of you started new projects and others may have completed some UFOs.
I prepared for my Botannix class coming up on the 24th February which was great fun. Check out the details here.
Here is a picture of what the Leaf looked like after I had used it a few times. Beautiful. The background is a Gelli print waiting for more attention.Think I will attach the leaf and put it on a canvas.
I have attended a number of wonderful events this past year.
There were amazing displays of talent at the Birmingham Festival of Quilts. I do love catching up with friends from here ,one of whom was Alsyn Midgelow-Marsden. Not only was she exhibiting and teaching, she also bought two lovely ladies,Sulieti Fieme’a Burrows and her daughter Tui Emma Gillies who practice and work in the art of Tongan Tapa cloth.

Fabulous time at the National Quilt Symposium. Wow what a buzz Jen and I had.
The ladies loved the Gelatos and we sold out the sets in the first two days.( Back in stock now if you missed out)It was an amazing job done by all the volunteers in organising and running this event. Here are some of the numbers
Symposium by the Numbers
1780 completed the initial Expression of Interest
989 enrolled for Symposium and attended classes. Many also volunteered.
60 merchants staffed 28 stands
Bernina NZ provided 6 staff for Symposium
57 tutors & lecturers motivated and inspired us
11 Committee members and their 37 sub committee members managed the event
Plus around 60 other volunteers – friends, husbands, members of the quilting fraternity
Makes a total 1220 involved in Symposium!
We held 152 classes over 5 days = 1350 class hours.
There were 45 or 46 classes every day
The largest number of Bernina machines hired out on any one day was 286
Sandy, our Merchants' co-ordinator walked 288,285 steps over the week!
We served 744 lunches on Friday and an average of 656 morning teas each day.
We had 341 quilts submitted for the exhibitions, 170 were accepted for display. plus 34 Postcards From the Front.
The Venue sub committee all did at least 30,000 steps each day and one day Glenys did in excess of 40,000 steps. Hint for Auckland - get in training!
Over the course of the week we gave out over 800 prizes, with spot prizes, at Carnival and Happy Hours.

After Symposium Judy Coates- Perez taught a class up in Whangarei . This is a little quilt I made using the fabrics I printed and painted in the class for the back ground and then using stencils, foils and thermofax screens for the foreground. A wonderful tutor and a very talented artist. Judy designs and uses thermofax screens and I have kept some to sell on my website . She also left her books so check them out here.
Coming up in 2018
I will be demonstrating Gelli Plate printing and how to use Faber Castell Gelatos .
This event was so successful last year they have moved to the big tent. Well worth the stop off between Auckland and Whangarei. Even a trip from Auckland just an hour and half up the road.
